With a family visa in the UAE, a resident sponsors close relatives to live here with them. When your own residence comes from Dubai, your relatives' visas are issued by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA Dubai), and the rules are identical whether you are on a Dubai employment visa or a Dubai investor visa.

Who you can bring: a wife or husband; daughters, at any age, while unmarried; sons up to their 25th birthday; and children who have special needs, whatever their age. Mothers can sponsor on the same terms as fathers.

The first of the UAE family visa requirements is income: a monthly AED 4,000, which drops to AED 3,000 when your employer provides housing. Job titles no longer count. Family visas also end when yours ends, so if your residence has only a few months left, renew it before you start.

Housing in Dubai is proved through Ejari, the lease registration system of the Dubai Land Department. GDRFA expects a registered lease big enough for the household and a recent DEWA bill; if you own the home, the title deed replaces the lease. An Ejari that has lapsed, or that sits in another person's name, is one of the most frequent reasons files are returned.

Insurance is the other Dubai difference. Your employer must cover you, but not your relatives: Dubai's health insurance law makes the sponsor insure each dependant unless the employer's policy already includes them, and cover has to be live before GDRFA approves the residence. Adults in the family, meaning 18 and over, also sit a DHA medical screening; children skip it.

How to apply: start with paperwork from abroad. Marriage and birth certificates are legalised in the country that issued them, at the UAE mission there and by the UAE's foreign ministry, and translated into Arabic where needed. Relatives outside the country receive an entry permit and must finish the residence within 60 days of landing; relatives already here on another visa can usually switch without flying out. The finished residence is digital, held against each person's Emirates ID.

Parents follow a separate GDRFA Dubai track: a one-year, renewable residence decided case by case by a committee. GDRFA lists a minimum salary of AED 10,000, an attested lease and recent bank statements, and takes a refundable guarantee once a case is approved. Holders of the UAE Golden Visa can sponsor a wider circle of relatives.
