When people search for a freelance visa in Dubai, they usually mean two separate things. The **freelance permit** (a licence in your own name) gives you the legal right to work for yourself and invoice clients. The **residence visa**, issued by GDRFA Dubai through a sponsor, lets you live in the UAE and get an Emirates ID. With GoFreelance, the permit becomes your sponsor, so one application leads to both. Some people only need the permit, for example if they already live here on a spouse's or parent's visa.

**GoFreelance: the main Dubai route.** GoFreelance is run by TECOM Group, and the licence is the Freelancer (Sole Professional) Licence issued by the Dubai Development Authority. It covers four fields: tech, media, education and design. You're licensed in one of TECOM's communities, Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City, Dubai Knowledge Park or Dubai Design District, with access to a hot desk there, so you don't need to rent an office. The licence is in your own name as shown in your passport; you can't trade under a brand, and you can't sponsor staff.

**The visa: one or two years.** After the licence, you get an establishment card, then apply for a one-year or two-year residence visa. It stays valid as long as your licence and establishment card are renewed. You'll need valid health insurance, a UAE phone number and a medical fitness test, then Emirates ID biometrics. Visas are no longer stamped in passports; your Emirates ID is your proof of residence. If you apply from abroad, you must enter the UAE to finish the process.

**Dubai freelance visa requirements in practice.** The licence itself needs only a passport copy, a self-declaration form if you already hold a UAE visa (so you can freelance while employed), and an NOC from another authority if your activity needs one. But since late 2025, free zones have been checking more closely that your experience matches your activity. Expect to show a CV, portfolio, qualifications or client contracts, at application and at renewal. GDRFA Dubai said in November 2025 that freelance visas are still being issued and that it has stepped up checks against people selling fake approvals; apply only through official channels or an adviser who uses them.

**Other ways to freelance in Dubai.** GoFreelance isn't the only option: - If your activity isn't in tech, media, education or design, or you want to trade under a business name, a licence from Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) may fit better, such as a Dubai mainland professional licence for a one-person consultancy. - If you want staff, a trade name or more visas, set up a company in the same community instead, such as Dubai Internet City or Dubai Media City. - Experienced self-employed professionals may qualify for the five-year Green Visa, which needs a MOHRE freelance permit, a bachelor's degree or specialised diploma, and self-employment income of at least AED 360,000 a year for the past two years or proof of financial solvency. - If you work remotely for an employer outside the UAE and earn at least US$3,500 a month, the one-year Virtual Work residence visa may suit you. - Freelance permits in other emirates are an alternative; compare with the Ajman freelancer licence.

**Tax.** As a licensed freelancer you're running a business: register for UAE VAT if your taxable turnover passes the mandatory threshold, and check whether UAE Corporate Tax registration applies to your business income.
