A flexi desk in Dubai is a shared workstation in a business centre or free zone building that counts as your company's registered premises. It's the smallest workspace most Dubai licences accept, and for many new companies it's enough. The catch is that the space you choose also limits how many people the company can sponsor, so the right choice depends on your licence and your hiring plans, not just the rent.
On the mainland, the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) needs a tenancy registered in Ejari, the Dubai Land Department's lease system. A desk in a business centre licensed to offer Ejari for desks can meet that for many activities. The exception is the Dubai Instant Licence, which DET issues with a virtual site for the first year only; you need real premises by renewal. In a free zone, the workspace is part of the licence package and the lease is issued by the zone itself. Each zone sets its own visa allocation per workspace type. DMCC, for example, publishes up to three visas for a flexi desk, four or five for a serviced office depending on its size, and one visa per nine square metres of physical office. Other zones, such as Meydan, IFZA, DSO, DAFZ and JAFZA, set allocations by package, so we confirm the current figure with the zone before you commit.
Think about headcount before you sign. If you expect to sponsor staff on an employment visa within the first year, check that the workspace's allocation covers them. You can usually move to a larger space later, typically when you renew your trade licence, but changing premises mid-term means amending the lease and licence records. If you work alone and don't need a company at all, a Dubai freelancer permit may suit you better than a desk.
A flexi desk isn't right for everyone.
